Difference Between European Blackjack and Spanish 21

Online Blackjack is one of the most popular table card games and is available in a number of variants depending on the casino you play at. Playing this casino game while employing the best strategies could lower the house edge up to 0.5%. However, European Blackjack doesn’t seem to tickle many players.

Spanish 21, on the other hand, is an interesting variant with some differences in the gameplay. There are a number of side bets as well.

With that brief intro, take a look at some of the glaring differences between Spanish 21 and European Blackjack.

Difference Between European Blackjack and Spanish 21

How to Play Spanish 21?

Spanish 21 is played using 6 decks. Players get 2 cards and will continue receiving the cards unless they stand without surpassing 21. Once you have placed your bets, you will receive your cards and you will be required to either stand or hit. The dealer will do the same and the stronger hand will carry the day.

In Spanish 21, you have a chance of splitting a pair and carry on betting with 2 hands. You can split again if you get another pair. The winning hand will pay out 1:1.

Spanish 21 vs European Blackjack: The Glaring Differences

One of the most notable differences between the 2 variants is the lack of 10s in Spanish 21. The 10s are eliminated from the deck and this means that your hand consists of a lot of low cards. Getting a chance to indulge in side bets is quite difficult in European Blackjack. You can get an insurance bet to shield you from losses should the dealer form a Blackjack. This bet will pay out 2:1, but that’s it.

On the other hand, Spanish 21 offers a wide variety of side bets. In addition, there are other payouts you can land here:

  • A 5-card to payout 3:2
  • A 6-card to payout 2:1
  • A 7-card to payout 3:1
  • A 21 with three 7s to payout 3:2
  • A 21 with 6, 7 and 8 to payout 3:2
  • 21 with 3 sevens of an identical suit to payout 2:1
  • 21 with 3 sevens and the dealer with a 4th seven to payout 50:1

If you get 21 you will always win in Spanish 21 while a Blackjack will beat the dealer any time. This could be quite hard considering that there are no 10s. The dealer will only stand on 17 and hit on 16 in European Blackjack. On the other hand, in Spanish 21, the dealer could hit on soft 17 with an ace. This move could see the house edge increase.

In Spanish 21, a Blackjack will not break a tie. In the event that both the dealer and the player have a Blackjack, the player will carry the day.
